Startup-config Is Not Present
- Mar 12, 2018 Router# show startup-config; startup-config is not present; Why does the router respond with the startup-config is not present message? It displays this message because the configuration file was not saved to NVRAM. Currently it is only located in RAM. Part 2: Configure and Verify the Initial Router Configuration.

Save the startup configuration file to flash using the following commands: R1# copy startup-config flash Destination filename startup-config The router prompts to store the file in flash using the name in brackets. If the answer is yes, then press ENTER; if not, type an appropriate name and press ENTER.

The reload simply cleans the current running-config and brings the startup-config into running-config.

I do not advocate the use of brain dumps and will not provide resources pointing to them. Well, consider a situation in which you have two similar configuration files i.e. Startup and running. Now you make changes such as modifying the fa0/1 to fa0/10. Before saving to startup configuration file you also have made so many other NEW changes, changes that were not yet mentioned in the startup file before.AT THIS POINT now suppose you have to revert the changes you made to fa0/1 to fa0/10 again while still at the CLI, remember you have not saved the current 'running' file to startup file yet.
In this situation the easiest way to revert the partial settings and keeping the partial seeting - both, such as with fa0/1 to fa0/10 can be changed with the command 'copy star run' while the new changes are will remain present which were not present in the startup file before and the old one will replace the new one such as fa0/1 to fa0/10. Hence, half work is reverted to old settings and half (new settings - not present in the startup file before) will be merged.
And your time and efforts will remain intact.
