I utterly loathe it.I LOVE complex things and all the choices mods can give. But Black Ice is a failure at that.
First off it's the buggiest, most crash-prone mod I've ever played with all of my runs ending because I literally couldn't get past a certain date without crashing.Secondly, it commits the most terrible sin a mod can make - instead of 1 expensive 'infantry' or 'tank' equipment, it makes 10 cheap 'car' 'gun' 'clothing' equipments. Why is this bad? Well, for one, it doesn't actually make the game any more unique or interesting. It's not a hard choice - 'do I invest more in clothing or guns?' Since the effect still ends up the same - my units will not have supply. It's the same as vanilla, if you don't build enough infantry equipment your units will suffer the same penalties.
But the really bad reason? It bugs out the game. You can even do this in vanilla if you just build a TON of infantry equipment - the moment you hit 1.8 million in the stockpile it bugs out and goes to -1.8 million.
This happens so often in these mods its annoying as hell.Lastly, the research is just horrendous. For a start, it seemed to me that when you research a new 'thing' for your units, like snipers or infantry cannons or mines, you then have to produce it but your units also suddenly need it - so now all those units that were 100% supply suddenly aren't because you invented a new type of gun. Not to mention the stupid huge array of artillery, tanks, aircraft, ships - you can chose between all of these things but it is never clear which choice gives you what. Why would I want a type A destroyer over a type B? Why does there need to be 8 different types of artillery? It's a nice concept. Terrible execution. I don't like it.You get swamped in many tiny decisions that are impossible to get an overview of.
I really like having country specific researches, but do we really need over 20 different submarines? Can anyone tell me the difference between type A2 and type B2? When would you use one over the other?Went back to vanilla after trying it for a few games. Black Ice seems to run on a more choices = better philosophy, more submarine models, more plane models, 4 types of infantry (garrison, militia, infantry and light infantry).Again when would I use garrison? When would I use militia?
Also over 30 different types of planes. Again when would I use ki-30 over ki-32?It would be much better if every aircraft / ship etc had a clearly defined use case. I don't like it.
It addes choices but in my opinion reduces them. New equipment for light, marine, etc. Means you cannot swap between them. Want to create marines better ramp up production even though they used similar equipment. Ignoring the fact all infantry battalions are light infantry. The abundance of artillery made the support system stupid. Having that much artillery is busted.
You can have 10 artillery companies and blast anyone to pieces. Mountain guns in game are represented by just giving mountaineers artillery. But by seperate the it you cannot easily move between them. You can have hundreds of mountain guns in storage but unable to use any of them. Mountain guns only being transported differently and generally smaller they are pretty similar.New tank types means you cannot switch between them. Sorry you have 100 kv-2 but they are not this specific so you cannot use them. Really though the tanks where very very similar in ww2.
The differences are more minor and open to interpretation. Their is no fixed soft, or speed stat. Many factors influence it not just sending HE down range or moving fast on road.Really though it just aims to give some people what they want choices. But it in my opinion fights and compromise the system to get that done. Also not really super focused on history just more options.
I enjoy it though it's a very different playstyle to vanilla and can be a bit jarring for new players. I guess its all how you define 'better', i guess.I used to dabble with BICE for HoI3, and back then it kinda worked, because it was an game that was basically designed with micromanaging stuff in mind. HoI4 isn't anything like that though, but the mod authors are still trying to shovel everything they can into the game as they did with HoI3; it doesn't quite work, IMO.90% of the stuff BICE adds doesn't really add anything to the experience. Its just another thing you have to micromanage. And the AI just cannot do it, so they buff the AI to ridiculous lengths; this isn't a new trick, they did the same in HoI3 BICE; the Soviets would get buffed to almost god-like status, and, IIRC, get given divisions that would appear out of nowhere when Germany invaded. You can probably guess, but I don't think BICE is good, nor better than vanilla; Keiserreich and Road to '57, for example, both make the game far more fun, and far more interesting, even though they probably don't add as much tech/guns/tanks etc - because what they DO add is far more meaningful. In BICE, things just exist for the hell of it.
Kinda late to the party but just wanted to say i love Black Ice and play nothing else.reading the rest of the comments here - different strokes for different folks i guess - i would admit much of the criticism posted by others here is at least partially justified: it is more crash prone than other mods and micro management can become overwhelming especially in the late game.
