HOVER FOR DETAILS! Why would one want to play a slower game?Among various differences, movement and battle doesn't change based on game speed.

As such, units can be used for longer. On Quick speed units can obsolete before they even get to a battle. On Standard they still obsolete somewhat quickly if you roughly follow their progression path (e.g. Longswords to Muskets to Rifles). If you go Marathon, you could probably play an entire game in one or two eras. A lot of people consider early game UUs kind of lackluster because they are only relevant for a short period of time and during a time when you might be better off building other things.

Civ 6 and Game Speed submitted 2 years ago by FRBls As crazy and deranged as I'm sure this sounds, I've started playing games on Marathon lately and I find that my enjoyment of Civ 6 has exponentially skyrocketed. Well on marathon if you have a good early UU you could probably kill the entire world with it.But I agree that taking a million turns to make a tile improvement isn't thrilling. Many prefer a sort of modded version of longer game speeds where research times are higher but production times aren't scaled up quite that high. It seems such variations can be called 'Historic'. That's probably a consequence of the lower production. Settlers, libraries, etc can be built faster proportional to Standard speed and then the effect is accumulated more strongly over time. I've found that I still can win 'Historic' games by turn 500, just the era might not be all that late.I'd say this still could be true to some effect on even unmodded Marathon. UUs can be relevant for a lot longer compared to quickly fading into a upgrade of a basic unit or possibly just reverting to a base unit, so Domination can be stronger.

Nabbing certain wonders like the Great Library is probably a lot more significant because Universities for a science boost are much further in the game on Marathon compared to Standard. Food and production upgrades from tile improvements can probably also be proportionally stronger if workers are acquired earlier than other civs / some workers have different goals like chopping jungle for years on end. In addition to what else has been said, slower game speeds are also much easier.First, they emphasize combat a lot more. As combat is easily the AI's weakest point, it's incredibly trivial to run roughshod over them on Marathon.Second, the degree to which production and research costs increase is often less than the total amount of hammers and beakers you'll be able to accumulate. This means that often, progress will be 'faster' in a Marathon game, in the sense that you'll probably be hitting milestones in an earlier calendar year than you would on faster speeds - and as a result, getting a higher score.
